OTC (Over-the-counter) medicines are the preferred first line of treatment with 7 out of 10 physicians recommending them to their patients as initial course of therapy. They also reduce the burden on healthcare system and lead to savings to the tune of $146 billion per year in the U.S., as 90% of consumers would seek professional help if not for OTC medicines. Despite the lack of prescription requirement, HCPs still end up playing an important role in OTC use, with 30% of first time OTC brand purchases are influenced by recommendations from a HCP.
